Large Garden Design for Country Homes & Estates

A large garden rewards ambition, but it also demands a plan. An acre of lawn, a paddock, an orchard past its best, a series of disconnected spaces around a fine house — without a coherent design, even generous grounds can feel like a burden rather than a pleasure.

Our large garden design service brings order, beauty and purpose to substantial plots across Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire and the surrounding counties. We create country and estate gardens that sit naturally within the Cotswold landscape, complement the architecture of the house, and — crucially — can be delivered in sensible, well-managed phases rather than one overwhelming upheaval.

A Phased Approach That Puts the House First

Few clients wish to turn their entire grounds into a building site at once, and fewer still should. We design the whole garden as a single, unified vision, then deliver it in stages — typically beginning with the areas you see and use every day.

PhaseTypical focusWhy it comes first
OneTerracing, seating and planting nearest the houseImmediate daily enjoyment; frames every view from your windows
TwoPrincipal garden rooms, lawns and pathwaysEstablishes the structure and flow of the wider garden
ThreeOuter areas — orchards, meadows, woodland edges, kitchen gardensLonger-horizon planting that matures as the garden establishes

Phasing also spreads investment sensibly. Because the master plan is fixed from the start, each stage builds towards the same finished garden — nothing is undone, moved or regretted later.

Managed From Inception to Completion

Garden design for large gardens is as much about management as imagination. A substantial project involves surveyors, contractors, growers and specialist trades, and someone must hold the thread. That is Steve's role throughout.

He commissions a full site survey using qualified surveyors and laser measurement, resolves any planning considerations early, produces scale drawings and 3D visuals of the master layout, then tenders the construction to trusted local trades and oversees the build to specification — protecting both the quality of the work and the agreed budget. Materials are sustainable and honestly sourced wherever possible, from reputable nurseries and local suppliers, so the garden belongs to its landscape in substance as well as style.

Every construction project is backed by a 12-month warranty, and once the garden is planted, our Seasonal Aftercare keeps it developing as intended.

Begin With a Conversation, Not a Commitment

The best first step for a large garden is a pre-design consultation — an unhurried walk around your grounds to discuss what the space could become. From there, a design proposal sets out the vision, the phasing and a clear quotation.

We design large gardens across Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire and Worcestershire. Tell us about your garden — however large, however overgrown — and we will prepare a tailored proposal. You can also explore our planting plans and full range of services.
