Anyone can fill a border. Filling it with plants that thrive — in that soil, that light, at those heights, flowering in succession from February snowdrops to October asters — is another discipline entirely. That discipline is the planting plan.

A planting plan is a detailed, plant-by-plant design for your beds and borders: what goes where, why, and how the whole composition will look in every month of the year and every year of the next decade. It is one of our most considered services, and for many clients the single most valuable document we produce.

What a Planting Plan Actually Is

Think of it as the difference between buying furniture and commissioning an interior. A planting plan specifies each plant's position and quantity, drawn to scale, alongside its growing requirements and role in the wider scheme. The result is a planting design in which every choice earns its place:

• Position and spacing — so plants have room to reach maturity without crowding or gaps
• Growing requirements — matched precisely to your conditions, not to a wish list
• Colour — palettes composed to complement your home, your hard landscaping and the Cotswold light
• Height and form — layered from ground cover to structural specimens, so borders have depth from every viewpoint
• Seasonal interest — succession planned deliberately, so the garden never has an "off" month

The Science Beneath the Beauty

Before a single plant is chosen, we study the site. Sunlight is mapped through the day and across the seasons; soil is assessed for type, drainage and pH; wind, frost pockets and existing root competition are all taken into account. Only then does the creative work begin — because a planting scheme, however lovely on paper, succeeds or fails on whether its plants can genuinely flourish where they are put.

This rigour has a very practical benefit: it minimises costly plant loss. Gardens planted on guesswork are replanted every few years, at real expense. Gardens planted to a considered plan establish quickly, knit together and improve with age. The plan pays for itself in the plants you never have to replace.

Every commission is bespoke, but a typical planting plan includes a scale planting layout for each bed and border; a full plant schedule with quantities and specifications for ordering; notes on sourcing — we work with reputable local growers and nurseries, favouring sustainable, peat-free stock; and establishment guidance covering the critical first seasons, supported by our Seasonal Aftercare service.

You may plant it yourself, hand it to your gardener, or have us arrange and oversee the planting — from cottage garden planting plans brimming with soft, romantic abundance to contemporary schemes of grasses and perennials with quiet, architectural rhythm.

On Its Own, or as Part of a Wider Design

Planting plans are commissioned in two ways. Within a full garden design — small or large — the planting plan is the stage where structure becomes atmosphere: the drawings gain their colour, scent and movement. As a standalone service, it suits gardens whose bones are already good but whose borders have lost their way, or new borders awaiting a scheme worthy of them.
